CHICKADEE CLASSIC SHOW

This 4-day AKC All Breed Conformation, Show is held each June at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, Maine in partnership with the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club and the Central Maine Kennel Club. The show includes junior showmanship, puppy competitions and the AKC National Owner-Handled Series. The beautiful, gated grounds and easy accessibility have made the Chickadee Classic Show one of Maine's favorite outdoor shows. Entries are made through InfoDog. RV parking and camping is available.

HANDLING CLASSES

Handling classes are held periodically throughout the year at Uncommon Dog in Holden, Maine. The classes provide practice for dogs and their handlers at all levels of experience. Junior handlers, puppies and inexperienced handlers are welcome. Classes offer a supportive atmosphere with a goal to improve the performance of both dog and handler working as a team.

PET FOOD PANTRY

PVKC members collect and distribute dog food to food pantries in Penobscot and Hancock county to assist pet owners experiencing economic hardship. The donated food decreases the number of dogs surrendered to shelters and promotes proper nutrition for both dogs and their owners.

PVKC Fast CAT

Our AKC Fast CAT is held in September. Fast CAT, which stands for Coursing Ability Test – is a timed 100-yard dash where dogs run one at a time, chasing a lure. All dogs can participate in Fast CAT, whether purebred or mixed breed. Although it is a relatively new sport, its popularity has spread like wildfire. The Fast CAT® provides a terrific opportunity to introduce new participants to the world of AKC sports as one of the few events where all that is needed to compete is a dog’s natural instincts.

PROGRAMS

EDUCATION

Short presentations by invited guests on a variety of subjects are offered at PVKC monthly meetings. Examples of past topics include Maine Search and Rescue, carting and veterinary care. In-school educational programs include talks such as "How to Greet a Strange Dog" and "Bite Prevention".

LEGISLATIVE LIAISON

PVKC is a sponsoring member of the Federation of Maine Dog Clubs which deals with responsible dog ownership and legislative issues. PVKC participates in "Lobby Day" held at the Maine State Capital House in Augusta - an outreach event to familiarize state legislators with the concerns of responsible dog owners and breeders.
