Handling classes are held periodically throughout the year at Renaissance Dogs in Holden, Maine. The classes provide practice for dogs and their handlers at all levels of experience. Junior handlers, puppies and mixed breeds are welcome. Classes offer a supportive atmosphere with a goal to improve the performance of both dog and handler working as a team.
PVKC members collect and distribute dog food to sixteen food pantries in three counties to assist pet owners experiencing economic hardship. The donated food decreases the number of dogs surrendered to shelters, promotes proper nutrition and enables pet owners to provide proper veterinary care.
CHICKADEE CLASSIC SHOW
This 4 day AKC All Breed Conformation, Obedience and Rally Show is held each June at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, Maine in partnership with the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club. The show includes junior showmanship and puppy competitions. For the past several years, the PVKC has hosted the Central Maine Brittany Club's Specialty Show and Supported Entry. The PVKC holds an annual AKC sanctioned breed, obedience and rally match in the fall in Bangor, Maine. This is a great time for puppies, kids and families to have some fun and to test your skill in the ring in an informal setting. "Meet the Breeds" provides an opportunity for the public to get information from dog breeders, handlers and trainers on responsible dog ownership as well as characteristics and temperaments of different purebred dogs.
Short presentations by invited guests on a variety of subjects are offered at PVKC monthly meetings. Examples of past topics include Maine Search and Rescue, carting and veterinary care. In-school educational programs include talks such as "How to Greet a Strange Dog" and "Bite Prevention".
PVKC is a member of the Federation of Maine Dog Clubs which deals with responsible dog ownership and legislative issues. PVKC participates in "Lobby Day" held at the Maine State Capital House in Augusta - an outreach event to familiarize state legislators with the concerns of responsible dog owners and breeders.
